Our Mission
The mission of the Longboat Key Historical Society is to research, collect, preserve, and exhibit materials, photography and artifacts relating to the history of Longboat Key’s people, places and events. Through educational activities, advocacy, and outreach to both residents and visitors alike, the society seeks to maintain a continuous bond with those who came before us, inspiring a sense of place and keeping our history alive.

Saving The Whitney Beach Cottages
When Gordon & Lora Whitney opened their beachfront cottages to some of Longboat Key's first visitors in the 1930, they could not have imagined nearly 90 years later, two of their precious cypress bungalows ,might be facing a date with a wrecking ball. As luck and timing would have it, citizens and lovers of Longboat Key, now have the opportunity to preserve 2 of these cottages as the forever home of the Historical Society.
